Public Hearing Tonight – Introducing Day Pass on Clipper

The Central Contra Costa Transit Authority (County Connection) will hold a public hearing to gather comment on the proposed introduction of a Day Pass Accumulator, available on the Clipper Card expected to be ready for use on County Connection buses in the Fall of 2015. Clipper Card is the regional transit fare payment system. The new fare instrument will place a maximum fare payment of $3.75 per day for adults and youths, and $1.75 for seniors and disabled passengers, when using the Clipper Card for payment of cash fares on County Connection buses. In short, passengers may make unlimited local bus trips for $3.75 or $1.75 a day depending on the fare category. Comments may be submitted in writing, via email, or at the scheduled public hearing.   • If I understand this correctly, one must tap their clipper card on the bus’ card reader everytime, but once you’ve reached $3.75/$1.75 in your fare category on a given calender day, no more cash value will be taken off your clipper card even when you continue to tap the card reader? Of so, this is a great idea and I can’t wait to have clipper available on CC busses. I think CC ridership will get a little bit of an increase from this. I’m thinking I’ll ride the bus more too, and go from my neighborhood at PH BART to Sun Valley and enjoy the BJs Brew house for example. 🙂

    • Yes, that is correct. You will also have the option to purchase a 30 day unlimited pass. Details are getting worked out and as we get closer, we will have more information to provide.   • when will the buses start accepting the Clipper and for diabled/senior riders,will the rides still be free between 10-2?

    • Very soon. Just recently the installation of the equipment was completed on the fleet. We’re going through a couple phases of testing -communication systems, and then field testing with active ticket. We’re expecting to launch Nov. 1

      At that time seniors can use their senior Clipper card and have the discounted fares apply to the stored cash value. There will also be a day pass associated with cash value payments so that the most a senior passenger will pay is $1.75 for all trips, and the most an adult or student will pay is $3.75.

      And yes…the free mid day program will remain in place. But DON’T tap your card. This is a County Connection only program that is not programmed into the bigger picture. Just show your card to the driver like you do now.

  • If you take less than 3 trips per day, the day pass will cost more for seniors than the current punch card system. Will the new Clipper system allow free transfers within a limited time period? If these glitches are not fixed there would be a significant distincentive to using Clipper. Will the current punch card system be discontinued?

  • Apologies. I think I didn’t make myself clear. The two trip problem: punch card $0.75 plus 0.75= $1.50; Clipper $1.00 plus $1.00 = $2.00. Thus a disincentive to Clipper use and functionally a fare raise.

    • Good morning. In answer to your first question – yes, Clipper will recognize transfers within the 2 hour window. And you’re correct that there will still be a small savings using the punch card if you make 2 trips a day – 2 trips = $1.50. The day pass accumulator puts a cap of $1.75 for unlimited trips per day for those using the senior or RTC Clipper card. There is a convenience factor using Clipper as well as the ability to recover unused fare from a lost or stolen Clipper Card. We will continue to make punch passes available for those who prefer to use them.

      We will still offer the free mid day travel program. If you use the Senior or RTC Clipper card DONT’T TAP IT DURING THE 10-2 FREE PERIOD. This is a County Connection only program, so the fare will be deducted if you tap it – just show your card to the driver.
